An Introduction to Hainan Medical University

Hainan Medical University (HMU), under the auspices of the Hainan Provincial Government, was founded in 1993 with the approval of the Chinese State Education Commission. The history of the university began with the integration of two medical schools, the privately-owned Haiqiang Medical Vocational School (founded in 1947) and the privately-owned Medical College of Hainan University (founded in 1948, Mr. Tse-ven Soong is the first chairman of the board) combined into a new school -- Hainan Specialized Medical School. In 2004, Hainan Medical University began its joint program of recruiting graduate students with Peking University and other institutions of higher learning in China. In 2005 the university was again ranked by the State Ministry of Education as “favorable” in its undergraduate education program. In 2006 the university began the international students programs.

Hainan Medical University has three campuses with 139 hectares of land (2096 Mu), located on Chengxi Road (36 hectares, 538 Mu), Longhua Avenue (6 hectares, 90 Mu) and West Coast (97 hectares, 1466 Mu). Presently on staff there are 2299 doctors, faculty or research staff members, among whom are 157 professors and 317 associate professors.

The University now offers 27 specialties (including major orientation) in three different medical disciplines to undergraduates, including medicine, science and management and 21 specialties (including major orientation) for students in the three-year vocational program. The university hosts 15 colleges and departmentse.g. College of Clinical Medicine, College of Vocational Education and School of International Education etc. There are 83 departments, 11 teaching laboratories and 8 research laboratories. There are 6 provincial key disciplines, 4 provincial key laboratories, 15 provincial-level quality courses, and 3 provincial key courses. There is one hospital directly affiliated with HMU, and three hospitals indirectly affiliated. About 80 teaching and internship base offer their service to HMU. To date, HMU has enrolled over 12,000 Chinese students and more than 100 international students.

Programs

Medical Undergraduate courses: Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Dental Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and so on. Students can get Graduation Certification after graduating from HMU and eligible students will be awarded Bachelor’s Degree Certificate.

Chinese language course: Chinese Language Study is for one year at the School of International Education of our university. After passed the required HSK Level Test, students can turn to medical professional study.

Entry requirements

The following are the requirements for international students applying for admission.

Candidates should be between 18 and 30 years old and in good health; Candidates should be non-Chinese citizens and hold the foreign valid ordinary passport.

Medical Undergraduate Diploma: Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Candidates should pass new HSK Level 2 or above for the majors of Clinical Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing. For clinical internship, students should pass new HSK Level 4. New HSK Level 4 is essential for admission to Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is required that applicant for Chinese language should be capable with the basic English language level.

Abide by laws and regulations of People's Republic of China.

Application documents

Completed Application Form of Hainan Medical University (can be downloaded, photo is required);

Original certificate of schooling of high school or copy, which should be translated into English or Chinese with notarization if other language.

Original academic record of high school or copy, which should be translated into English or Chinese with notarization if other language.

Copy of valid foreign passport.

Other supporting documents including HSK certificates and letters of recommendation, which will be given due consideration.

Prove documents of financial condition.

Note: Documents submitted will not be returned to the applicants, whether the application is successful or not.

Prior to September 30th per year for Autumn Semester;

Chinese language course: the entire year except for legal holidays

Note: Send the completed application form and all the relevant documents as listed above together to the School of International Education (address below). Application documents should reach the School of International Education before the final application deadline.

● All the courses are given in Chinese language.

● Registration time: Prior to September 30th per year for Autumn Semester;

Students should come to the university to register with ‘Admission Letter’ within two weeks. It is considered as giving up the entry opportunity if late for two weeks.

● All the matriculates shall register at the School of International Education on the date with the Admission Letter, JW202 Form, Physical Examination Record, Passport and 8 photos (2 x 1 inch, half-length, full-faced and bare-headed). Those who are two weeks overdue are considered abandoning the qualification on their own accord.

Matriculates are requested to pay tuitionregistrationteaching materials, lodging and insurance fees to HMU directly for each year, which is essential for registration.

Note: No any recruitment agency is entitled to receive fees on behalf of HMU.

Procedures of Visa to China

The School of International Education of HMU will mail the matriculates “Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China” (JW202 Form) and the Admission Letter from HMU. Matriculates must take a physical examination no more than 4 months in advance at the hospital designated by the Chinese Embassy. With the Admission Letter, JW202 Form and Physical Examination Record, Matriculates can go to the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate for visa application (X Visa).

Expenses (RMB Yuan)

International students are responsible for tuition and all other fees, including housing, medical care, meals, and any self-incurred miscellaneous expenses.

Fees for Medical courses:

Application Fee: RMB 1000

Tuition fee for Undergraduate Program in Medicine: RMB20500/year

Accommodation: RMB 3600-4800/year

Fees for Chinese language courses

Application Fee: RMB 400

Tuition fee for Chinese language: RMB 15000/year

Accommodation: RMB 3600-4800/year

Water and Electricity Fees: students shall be responsible for expenses of water and electricity consuming at hostels.

Notes

If students decide to transfer or withdraw, the paid fees will not be returned or transferred.
